Sixty-two years ago, as a teenager living in Canberra, JFK's assassination marked the beginning of my lifelong love affair with America—the country and its political, economic, and social ideals. This journey has been remarkable, both personally and professionally, especially through my work alongside American diplomats worldwide during and after the Cold War.
Today, however, America is unravelling, tangled and encumbered with bleeding and eroding ideals. It is now but a mere façade of its former self. One could almost rewrite the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence to say, “We hold these falsehoods to be self-evident.” A nation rarely falls into such disrepute in just twelve months; the United States may well have matched Nero’s infamous record.
I am sharing this reflection because 22 November 1963 probably remains an evocative date in the memories of some of you.
