Trump's America and Human Rights
The #USA and Israel also voted earlier against the UNGA Resolution that food is a human right. #Israel has been a lost cause for decades in observing Human Rights norms. As for America, the silver lining is that, having long preached to other countries, it now stands exposed for the world to know that it is willing to countenance HR violations at home, as is evident day after day, and abroad. Foggy Bottom diplomats, already highly defensive, can no longer make any judgements on Human Rights in, say, Iran, Myanmar, China, Nigeria or Egypt. The State Department’s next annual Report on the state of Human Rights worldwide, if issued, should make fascinating reading.
As I wrote on 3 September, American diplomats are in an invidious and embarrassing position today. Drawing from discreet conversations with former American diplomatic colleagues I have worked with in various posts (Beirut, Moscow, Hanoi, New Delhi, etc.), I would dread representing the U.S. today. How would I even begin to address questions or respond to global issues—whether human rights, environmental challenges, the geopolitical rifts and shifts, the state of American Democracy, or USAID? #USdiplomats striving to sincerely defend their nation’s interests have my deepest sympathy.
